Ireland’s Pádraig Harrington wrote another chapter into his illustrious career by capturing a record-equalling third US Senior Open title with a commanding four-shot victory at Scioto Country Club in Ohio.
The affable Dubliner also becomes only the third player to successfully defend the title and cements his status as one of the greatest players ever to compete on the senior circuit.
The three-time Major champion began the final round one stroke behind overnight leader Stewart Cink but produced a low round of the day 66 to finish on 12-under-par, comfortably four clear of the American as he claimed back-to-back US Senior Open titles to add to the crown he first won in 2022. The victory also saw Harrington draw level with Miller Barber as the championship's only three-time winners.
"It was all about staying patient," Harrington said after lifting the Francis D. Ouimet Memorial Trophy. "Winning never gets easier. Every time you put yourself in position, the nerves are there and the pressure is there. That's what makes it worthwhile."
“I believe my win is an all-time record! What a great venue we had this week. Fabulous golf course. Great test set up by the USGA this week with some really tough pins.
“Delighted I could get it done today without too much drama, unusual for me not to make too many mistakes coming down the stretch. A very nice, comfortable win. I’ve been told the most anyone has ever won is three of these, so hopefully that’s not the end for me.”
The victory represents Harrington's fourth senior Major and continues an extraordinary run since joining the over-50 ranks. Already a three-time Major champion with two Open Championship wins and the PGA Championship, he has seamlessly transferred his competitive edge to the PGA Tour Champions, where he continues to add to an already glittering career.
Cink battled gamely but was unable to match Harrington's blistering finish. Former Ryder Cup star Ian Poulter enjoyed an excellent championship on his senior major debut, finishing fourth, while Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke also featured prominently, closing in a tie for eighth after another consistent week.
Harrington has repeatedly spoken about his desire to remain competitive rather than simply make up the numbers, and his performances continue to back up those ambitions. Far from winding down, he has become one of the dominant forces on the Champions Tour.
"This is why we play," Harrington said. "You keep coming back because you want to win. If you're in contention on Sunday, that's exactly where you want to be."
