Tiger Woods was released on bail after being arrested following his latest car crash when his Range Rover overturned on Jupiter Island in Florida, raising new concerns for the 15-times Major winner’s wellbeing.
The incident occurred near his home when apparently trying to overtake another vehicle before clipping the vehicle and flipping his Range Rover on its side. Woods was able to get himself out of the vehicle on the passenger side without suffering a serious injury.
One of the game’s icons was arrested and charged for driving under the influence. The incident took place at 2pm local time. Woods was jailed for eight hours before being released on bond today.
Sheriff John Budensiek said Woods was charged with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. He also said there were no injuries and the situation could have been a lot worse. Woods passed a breathalyser test but refused to give a urine sample, leaving police to suspect he was under the influence of medication or drugs.
“Our DUI investigators came to the scene here and Mr Woods did exemplify signs of impairment,” said Budensiek. “They did several tests on him. He did explain the injuries and surgeries that he’s had, and we did take that into account, but they did some in-depth roadside tests.
“Mr Woods did a breathalyser test with triple zeros, but when it came time for us to ask for a urinary analysis test, he refused and so he has been charged with DUI, property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.”
The incident is the latest in a line involving Woods and car accidents and crashes. In 2021 he rolled an SUV in California and sustained serious injuries that kept the former world number away from the game as he underwent further surgeries.
In 2017 he was arrested for driving for being under the influence in Florida and checked himself into a clinic for help with prescription medication.
An incident in 2009 saw Woods crash into a fire hydrant and tree at his home, which went on to unveil events in his private life.
It remains to be seen how the latest in a line of incidents will impact Woods and ultimately his reputation as one of golf’s greatest players. Earlier this week Woods took part on the TGL Finals with his Jupiter Links GC team. Obvious questions were raised if Woods would be fit in time for the Masters, which takes place at Augusta from April 9-12.
