Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell’s qualified for the US, coming through a final 36-hole qualifier in Dallas to secure his place at Shinnecock Hills next month.
The 46-year-old qualified in tied fifth with rounds of 69, 69 for a four-under total at Dallas Athletic Club where American Peter Uihlein led on nine-under (67, 66). It’s the first time McDowell has qualified for the US Open since 2020 as the 2010 champion locked in one of the nine available spots in Dallas.
McDowell competed on the LIV Golf circuit, and his qualification ends a six‑year absence from major championships, a gap created after his 10‑year exemption for winning the 2010 US Open at Pebble Beach expired.
McDowell’s return to the Major circle also comes at a time of personal reflection. After paying fines to regain eligibility on the DP World Tour, he has expressed a desire to reconnect with events closer to home, including the Irish Open at Tump International in Doonbeg and potentially future Ryder Cup involvement.
“It feels good to have something to show for the work,” said a relieved McDowell afterwards. “You don’t get anything handed to you out here. You’ve got to go and earn it.”
The US Open takes place at Shinnecock Hills, Southampton, New York from June 18-21, 2026.
