LOWRY CONFIRMED FOR AMGEN IRISH OPEN AT DOONBEG

Former winner Shane Lowry will return to the island of Ireland to tee it up at the Amgen Irish Open at Doonbeg in County Clare from September 9-13 where he will be joined by defending champion Rory McIlroy.
Lowry, who made history when he won his national open on his debut appearance as an amateur at County Louth GC (Baltray) in 2009, will make his 18th consecutive appearance when the tournament arrives at Trump International Golf Links Ireland, Doonbeg, for the first time.
The Offaly man was the first amateur winner of the prestigious event and remains the most recent player to win on the DP World Tour before turning professional. A decade later, he became a Major winner, claiming the Claret Jug after winning The 148th Open on home soil at Royal Portrush.
The Ryder Cup hero, seeking a seventh DP World Tour title, headlines the world-class field set to assemble in County Clare, joining his European teammate, defending Amgen Irish Open champion and reigning Masters champion McIlroy.
Lowry said: “Playing in front of home fans at your national open is always incredibly special. It’s a tournament I love, one I grew up watching, and to have my name on the trophy means a great deal. There’s no better feeling than playing on home soil and I’m really excited for the Amgen Irish Open.
“Winning it again is always a goal. It’s going to be a fantastic field this year at Doonbeg and the partnership with Amgen has really helped elevate the tournament, and it’s great to see how much it means to fans in Ireland and how it continues to grow.
“I’ve had some strong performances in the event over the last few years and would love nothing more than to get my hands on that trophy again.”
Lowry delivered one of the most memorable moments in recent Ryder Cup history when his putt on the final green at Bethpage Black in New York secured the crucial half-point that retained the trophy for Europe in September last year. Luke Donald’s team won the Ryder Cup away from home for the first time in 13 years after surviving a remarkable United States comeback on a dramatic final day.

The Amgen Irish Open once again assumes a key position on the DP World Tour’s Global Schedule as part of the ‘Back 9’, which encompasses nine of the Tour’s most historic tournaments and national opens.
Lowry is part of an esteemed roll of honour to have won Ireland’s national open, which also includes Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Pádraig Harrington, Bernhard Langer, McIlroy, Colin Montgomerie, José María Olazábal, Jon Rahm, and Sam Torrance.

Lowry and McIlroy will headline the on-course action during the week, while off the course, five-piece Irish rock and pop band Keywest will take centre stage after play on Saturday in the Championship Village.
