Warrenpoint Golf Club enjoyed a sensational closing day to race into a runner-up finish at the European Men’s Club Trophy at Cabot Bordeaux Golf Club in France.

The County Down club, renowned for winning All-Ireland pennants, represented Ireland after winning the All-Ireland Senior Cup, finished runner-up to Denmark’s Smørum Golfklub, who successfully defended their title.

The Warrenpoint team comprised Stephen Coulter, Colm Campbell and Paul Reavey, who finished on two-over for the 54-hole championship but were still nine strokes behind the runaway Danish winners.

Coulter signed for an opening 70, while Campbell and Reavey kept in touch with their second round 71 and 72 respectively. However, it was in the third round where the South Down side made the most inroads. Reavey closed with a 69, while Campbell’s 71 also counted and Coulter was an able back up with his 72. That two-under final day meant Warrenpoint raced up the leaderboard to secure their silver medals.

Coulter was also rewarded in a personal level by finishing fourth in the individual championship, while Campbell and Reavey shared fifth spot.

Smørum finished on seven-under-par, with Daniel Toft, Mads Heller and Christian Photin Hansen occupying the top three positions in the individual standings.

Eindhovensche Golf of the Netherlands claimed third on seven-over.
